BEST WESTERN PLUS Chateau Granville Hotel & Suites & Conference Center
Hello Canada! In the Limelight is proud to make our initial foray north of the border to highlight a hotel that shows that Canadians’ know a thing or two about sustainable hospitality: BEST WESTERN PLUS Chateau Granville Hotel & Suites & Conference Center. Located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, the hotel has exemplified the city’s ambitious environmental goals; making their own operations more environmentally friendly, enhancing their guest’s ability to go green, and embracing a broad coalition of sustainable visions.
Bankrupting the Landfill
For the BEST WESTERN PLUS Chateau Granville Hotel & Suites & Conference Center, reducing the amount of waste disposed of as garbage has been a major goal. With the help of RecycleSmart, the hotel has been able to craft more sustainable methods for disposing much of the waste that is produced on a daily basis. A significant aspect to this waste reduction involved the introduction of composting.
Composting provides for efficient decomposition of food waste. And integrating composting into your hotel’s waste reduction program can be easier than you think. The BEST WESTERN PLUS Chateau Granville Hotel & Suites & Conference Center has experienced this first hand. Hotel staff, especially those providing kitchen and banquet service, are well versed in and active supporters of the composting efforts, ensuring that anything compostable IS composted! That means meat and fish scraps, vegetables, coffee grounds and filters, tea bag, towels and napkins, waxed paper, dough, and even winery waste are all composted. It’s been estimated that about 80% of food waste at the hotel is composted rather than sent to the landfill, which is certainly no small feat. And the City of Vancouver aids in the process, collecting composting materials three times a week, just as they would collect trash or recycling. These efforts have helped the hotel cut their overall waste by 70%, with a goal to reach an 80% reduction by the end of next year. Bravo Chateau Granville!
Greening the Guest
One of the more intriguing aspects of the BEST WESTERN PLUS Chateau Granville Hotel & Suites & Conference Center is the length they’ll go to allow each guest to experience an environmentally friendly stay. Key to this is the hotels participation in the EcoStay Program. Through this program, the hotel has begun collecting two dollars each night from guests to help support sustainable initiatives. 75% of what is collected is used to purchase carbon offsets from LivClean, to make the guests stay carbon neutral. The hotel uses the other 25% to help fund various other sustainable initiatives on site. Some of these efforts include:
- Donation of unused soap to be sanitized, recycled, and provided to less fortunate countries
- Dimmers installed in all guestrooms to allow for lower energy use
- All lights have been converted to LED bulbs
- Lights and HVAC operations in unoccupied conference rooms turned off, with motion sensors to be installed for increased energy efficiency
- All windows replaced with double-paned windows for energy savings
- Purchasing preference given to local and organic food producers, with some produce and herbs grown on site
Now you might think that adding two dollars a night to a guests stay would be bad for business, right? Well, guest participation in this program is optional, and the fee can be removed if requested. However, about 97% of guests have chosen to take part in the program.
There’s also an amazing level of transparency concerning the BEST WESTERN PLUS Chateau Granville Hotel & Suites & Conference Center’s environmental impact. Guests will be able to examine the hotel’s carbon emission reduction efforts on a monthly basis via Green Hotels Global. Talk about empowering the sustainable traveler. Oh, and they encourage guests to provide feedback and suggestions on further sustainable initiatives the hotel should undertake.
Sustainability in All Directions
In growing their hotel into a sustainable one, the hotel has found input and inspiration from many different sources. Staff and management have taken active roles, but the City of Vancouver and the Best Western Corporation have also exerted influence on the sustainable initiatives undertaken.
The City of Vancouver is striving to become the world’s greenest city by 2020. With that goal in mind, the BEST WESTERN PLUS Chateau Granville Hotel & Suites & Conference Center worked with the city to install electric vehicle (EV) chargers in their underground parking structure. These chargers are available for use by both guests and the general public. As previously mentioned, the city has also helped the hotel carry out its extensive composting program.
Best Western, through its corporate environmental goals, has helped push many of the developments at the hotel, including an Aquanomic Laundry Program, implemented at Best Western’s suggestion. This program has helped the hotel significantly reduce the amount of water and energy used in its laundry operations. In following those corporate goals, the hotel has also earned 4 Green Keys – both as a property and for their green meetings in particular.
The BEST WESTERN PLUS Chateau Granville Hotel & Suites & Conference Center has done well to blend these various environmental goals into one unique, yet incredibly sustainable hotel for their guests to enjoy, warranting a place In the Limelight.
